Members are encouraged to support their own charitable causes and may use troops to support those endeavors. Fundraisers may be designed and support can be given to the organization’s events through trooping and additional donation drives.

Vetting charities is very important to our membership – generally a 501(c)(3) in the United States should be the only type of charities we support. However, we do not discriminate against any causes, and will even support our own troopers in charity fundraisers through GoFundMe, Blast-A-Trooper events, or general donation drives. To investigate a charity, visit charitynavigator.com and read all the available information about the organization, including administrative fees, program expenditures, and potential issues. Use your best judgement in supporting the charity using the 501st Legion’s support network.

Once a charity has been selected, use their website to find an appropriate contact to discuss the nature of the 501st Legion partnership. Use professional language. Do not promise anything in the initial contact – use this time to explore all options with the organization. Do not guarantee specific characters or offer to approve the usage of Star Wars or the 501st Legion name in promoting charitable events. You may, however, offer to run Blast-A-Trooper, Droid Hunt, or other fundraising opportunities at their events, along with standard appearances. You can offer unique experiences, such as Darth Vader and Stormtroopers “invading” a private party in exchange for a donation to the charity. Be creative, but if you have any questions, please contact the Legion Charity Team.

寄付募集と基金運営

NOTE: Some governments require registration to solicit ANY type of fundraising, even if it’s for a third party. Please check with your local laws to verify if your unit can participate in any fundraising.

A few options to collect donations:

• The primary suggested method is having donors use online donation sites, naming the donation in honor of The 501st Legion. The receipt can be forwarded to the Unit Charity Officer for verification.

• If cash is involved, a member of the charitable organization should be on-site to collect the cash. At the end of the fundraising event, it’s suggested to have at least two Legion members count the donations with the charity organization staff for verification.

Is it acceptable for us to accept donation checks from the event requester at the event?
Yes, Lucasfilm has stated 501st Legion members may accept donations to charity organizations for our trooping. The following is an excerpt of the meeting highlights on April 12th, 2006: Finally, LFL recognize that 501st Legion may, at times, be bombarded with request for appearance by private individuals (e.g., at birthday parties, weddings, etc.). While we believe that it is inappropriate for 501st Legion to request financial compensation for appearances at these private functions, it is entirely appropriate to ask the requester to submit a donation to one of the Garrison’s charity organizations, even to the extent of collecting the donation check at the event.

Yes, website donations are preferred, but we can accept any donations.

How much does the Legion charge for appearing at events?

Which charity organizations does the 501st Legion work with?
The preferred charitable organization of the 501st Legion is Make-A-Wish Foundation, but we will work with any charities that our members wish.

If you are uncomfortable accepting donation check from event requesters, simply let the donater know that they could make their financial contributions directly online to any of the GGG charity organizations. In order for us to better track donations that we helped raise, please do ask that they copy or forward the donation acknowledgement to info@501st.com or you unit CO and charity representative.

If I am uncomfortable accepting donation check from event requester, what should I do?
If you are uncomfortable accepting donation check from event requesters, you can either ask for an online donation, or ask that the check be mailed directly to the charity selected.

I received a donation check at the event which is made payable to one of our charity organization, now what do I do with the check?
Please let your Command Staff know about the donation as soon as possible. The check may be mailed to the organization; most national charities have local chapters with donation information. Your Unit Charity Officer or Commanding Officer can take care of the donation, if needed.

Is there a way to show the amount of donations raised by Legion units and members?
Yes, all donations and charitable trooping hours are recorded by Unit leadership. You may see the prior year’s reports by visiting the Charity page. An annual report on The 501st Legion charitable contributions is published in March.
